Welcome to my blog

My name is Neil and this is my Universe...

Collectively known as the Neilyverse. I love watching films and Tv drama series. My favourites push the boundaries of the medium, others just follow a test audiences idea of what should happen. I prefer lots of WTF moments or genuine touching moments that creep up on you. I think i expect too much sometimes lol.

An aboriginal detective returns from the city to his home town in the outback to look for a missing girl and finds a hot bed of lawlessness and corruption. A dark crime thriller full of rich characters in this original fight for justice. 6.0/10

A scientist is called in to help Special Forces in Moldova to fight invisible killers. An interesting and well filmed effort from the Netflix studio. Brilliant effects and good direction are slightly let down by a supernatural plot. Worth a evening entertainment if you like the Sci-fi/horror cross over idea. 5.8/10

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as a former neurosurgeon who is forced to the seek mystic arts in order for him to recover from life changing injuries and discovers a fight for the world from another dimension. Some great “Inception” effects mixed with a child’s kaleidoscope make for a psychedelic viewing. Though the plot is not exactly rocket science and a few of the jokes seem to have been added after “Dead pool” / “Guardians of the galaxy”, the film sets up the Dr Strange character up nicely for his future involvement with the Marvel superhero universe. 5.9/10

An extrovert American, played by Nicolas Cage, decides to find and capture Osama Bin Laden. Nick Cage is so annoying in this and plays such a deluded character than I found myself skimming through after 30 mins. In my opinion unwatchable but this film is based on true events. I wondered if the guy got hit a lot in the face...just like you think Cage deserves lol. 2.0/10

Based in World War 2 this espionage drama revolves around an American spy who marries a French resistance fighter after a dangerous mission. Unfortunately he must question her loyalty when his superiors hear that she is not who she says she is. A quite enjoyable war time romp. 6.1/10

Ben Affleck in this prohibition gangster tale of revenge and betrayal...though not in that order. After the superb TV show “Broadwalk Empire” Affleck’s film seems a bit “Clean”. It tries to be “Goodfellas” 1920, or even “Once Upon a time in America” but is far too polished. Affleck looks like a large suit hanger rather than a snappy wealthy mob boss. On its plus side it has a well paced plot and I didn’t find myself getting bored but you will forget it within a couple of months. 5.6/10

As a bullied boy struggles to cope with the slow demise of his mother a strange monster wakes him in the middle of the night and helps him through his traumas. A good film with great effects that deals with some bleak issues in an original way. Felicity Jones (Star Wars Rogue One) does a great turn in this with the legendary Sigourney Weaver in support. A bit of a downer subject wise, but worth a watch, if you can cope with it. 6.2/10
