Welcome to my blog

My name is Neil and this is my Universe...

Collectively known as the Neilyverse. I love watching films and Tv drama series. My favourites push the boundaries of the medium, others just follow a test audiences idea of what should happen. I prefer lots of WTF moments or genuine touching moments that creep up on you. I think i expect too much sometimes lol.

As a bullied boy struggles to cope with the slow demise of his mother a strange monster wakes him in the middle of the night and helps him through his traumas. A good film with great effects that deals with some bleak issues in an original way. Felicity Jones (Star Wars Rogue One) does a great turn in this with the legendary Sigourney Weaver in support. A bit of a downer subject wise, but worth a watch, if you can cope with it. 6.2/10

Selene (the luscious Kate Bekinsale) must team up the last of the Vampires that exiled her in order to fight the new Lycan (Werewolf) leader who is hell bent on killing them all and drinking her blood. I really enjoyed “Underworld: Awakenings” but for this outing they seemed to have dug up a previous script and it is feeling far too familiar and bland. Whatever ! 5.0/10

The re-boot of the epic 1959 classic film which starred Charlton Heston. Ben Hur is an affluent and powerful Jew that after a Roman occupation is wrongly accused of being involved with an assassination plot. After being incarcerated he must then fight his way back to avenge his family. This feels like a cheapo version of the original sponsored by some Christian fund management fund. The Jesus bits felt like they had been patched on to appease some one that wasn’t me. A couple of good action scenes (Chariot race / slave ship) were the best of a bad bunch. Ben Hur came across as someone that needed a slap in the face and had no charisma at all. 4.5/10

Two teenage girls team up with a man-hunter to fight an ancient evil presence. If you like two annoying teen girls getting into stupid scrapes and going kick ass on mini German soldiers (WW1) then this is for you. I found it very tedious and unfunny and for a comedy that is not good. 4.0/10

An adult animated comedy about a sausage that falls in love with a bread bun in a supermarket. There is a utopian belief that humans are gods that will choose the food items and take them to the promised land. It sounds crazy and it is but if you look beyond the crude jokes and generic stereotypes there are some big ideas floating around in here. Whether the normal viewer of this crass comedy will get them or the more intellectual astute give them enough time is another story. I enjoyed it a lot more than I was expecting to even though the carnal apocalypse at the end was a bit WTF. 6.1/10

The enchanting Eva Green stars as Miss Peregrine in this fantasy book adaptation. Jacob learns he is different to other children until he discovers a home with other children that are like him. He must save the home and his new friends from evil dangers that threaten to wipe out there existence. I think it tries to be the next Harry Potter franchise but without the global fan following that the Rowling books had. Not amazing but worth a view. 5.5/10

J.K. Rowling’s newest addition to the ‘Harry Potter’ world sees a new character travel to America. In his suitcase is a magical menagerie of rare creatures, of which, some get loose. There is also a subplot of a Magical Terrorist with the city who is also after one of the creatures too. Great effects that will not be lost on any fan of the Harry Potter world support a solid companion piece to the Harry Potter World. Whilst watchable I was still not interested by the Kool Aid or ‘Butter beer’. 6.5/10
