Welcome to my blog

My name is Neil and this is my Universe...

Collectively known as the Neilyverse. I love watching films and Tv drama series. My favourites push the boundaries of the medium, others just follow a test audiences idea of what should happen. I prefer lots of WTF moments or genuine touching moments that creep up on you. I think i expect too much sometimes lol.

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as a former neurosurgeon who is forced to the seek mystic arts in order for him to recover from life changing injuries and discovers a fight for the world from another dimension. Some great “Inception” effects mixed with a child’s kaleidoscope make for a psychedelic viewing. Though the plot is not exactly rocket science and a few of the jokes seem to have been added after “Dead pool” / “Guardians of the galaxy”, the film sets up the Dr Strange character up nicely for his future involvement with the Marvel superhero universe. 5.9/10

After an amazing trailer this highly anticipated Marvel superhero movie could have been better. The story is that after letting a powerful sorceress unleash a powerful end of the world baddie it is up to the Government to amass a team of villains to go on a suicide mission to stop the apocalypse. I think the re shoots and the re editing detracted from the back ground stories but what you have left is still a nice twist on the usual super hero bollocks. Margot Robbie steals the show as Harley Quinn and has all the best lines. 6.0/10

If you liked the recent Netflix’s Marvel series: Jessica Jones / Dare Devil then you will like this. Luke Cage is a super strong bullet proof black man in a hoodie than is hiding out as a barber shop assistant until fate causes him to rise up and take a stand. A well told, through back stories and flash backs, story that gives all the characters depth. I did find the several “Carhartt” hoodies that Luke kept wearing annoying and no mention of the racist element of “Keeping Harlem black” upsetting but on the whole definitely worth a watch. 6.0/10

The McAvoy / Fassbender team of X:Men must fight an ancient Mutant that has been buried under a Pyramid for thousands of years before he destroys the Earth. They are lots of characters in this movie, perhaps too many as not many get the chance to shine as in previous X:men (first class series). Still I never seem to grow bored of Jennifer Lawrence as Raven/Mystique in her blue body suit. Not the best of the series but worth a watch. 5.9/10

Wow the Avengers are fighting each other, as they decide to obey or defy Government control of their deeds and abilities as collateral damage begins to mount up. Lots of characters “again”, including Ant Man & Spiderman, are seen battling it out in long “children friendly” fights. Yawn. It got a bit tedious for me, yes I know that this film is aimed at a younger market but it felt like there was no danger. Every character could prove popular enough for their own spin off film and thus no one was ever going to be mortally injured. I liked “Batman vs. Superman” better than this. 5.7/10

After making some bad choices a crook is recruited to wear a suit that changes his size to that of an ant but doesnt diminish his human strength. A fun packed family friendly film with an under used and exposed Evangeline Lilly (is that a really bad haircut or a wig). A bit too PG for me but watchable. 5.7/10
